It's hard to overstate the importance of selecting the right mic placement for your recordings. There are five basic choices: Spot miking, distant miking, ambient miking, stereo miking, and combined miking. In this article you will learn a little bit about each choice.

Spot Miking: This placement is also known as close miking for obvious reasons. It basically means that you are placing the mic close to what you are recording. It's often used to cut the room sound out of the recording. Most home recordists don't have an acoustically treated space to record in so they generally don't want much of the room sound.

A big reason that people choose spot miking is so that each instrument can be isolated when many instruments are being recorded at once. That will give you more flexibility when it comes to mixing.

You should note that the closer you place your mic to the source the more bass that is recorded.

Distant Miking: This usually means placing the mic about three or four feet from the source. People usually choose distant miking when they are trying to get a more natural sound.

The biggest negative with distant miking is if you are recording multiple instruments at once you may get "bleed" from another source which makes mixing more difficult.

Distant miking also means that more of the room sound will be recorded. Unless you have a good understanding of acoustics and your room is well treated then this is usually a bad thing.

Ambient Miking: This means you are placing the mic far away from the source that the room sound plays a big part in what you are recording. Clearly with this technique you will want to have a good sounding room.

Stereo Miking: This means recording with two mics to capture the stereo field of your source. One mic will be panned all the way left and the other all the way right.

If you want to take this concept to it's extreme then you want to look into binaural recording.

Combined Miking: As the name implies this means combining two or more of the above techniques. The possibilities are endless. I think it's a good idea to really master the top four techniques before you try to mix different techniques together.

One common technique is to mix a close mic with an ambient mic. That way you still get the attack from your source but you also get the ambiance that you want to capture. This can give you a nice natural reverb if you have a good sounding room.

Mic placement is an extremely important part of getting a good sound. It's important to learn how different mic placements sound and to keep experimenting with different placements until you get the sound that you want.

The music scene in Austin has fostered the career of many now famous musicians. Perhaps the most legendary, Stevie Ray Vaughan is one of the most influential blues guitarists in the world. He first played at Antone’s, the club founded by his mentor and record producer, Clifford Antone.

Television and annual festivals have helped Austin develop into the live music capital. The show Austin City Limits first aired on PBS in 1975. The live music experience showcased the variety of artists heard in Austin and helped significantly to grow the city’s music reputation. Almost every kind of music imaginable can be heard at the three day Austin City Limits Music Festival held every September. Since its inception in 2002, it has become one of the premier music festivals in the country.

The Sixth Street area of downtown Austin houses the largest collection of live music venues and is the location of the South by Southwest Festival. SXSW, as it is known, is a music and film festival that has generated more revenue than even the Texas Longhorn’s home games.

Certainly, the times of year that coincide with the music festivals are the most exciting for fans of live music. At any other time of year, tourists may be disappointed with the atmosphere of the famed Sixth Street area. Several of the original, small music venues have closed and in their place are more profitable bars and clubs.

The music download industry keeps evolving, as more players enter the game and alliances are formed within a blink of an eye. We’re all aware of AT&T partnering with giant Apple Inc. to promote the iPhone, which of course uses iTunes for its ringtone capabilities. As more mobile phones encompass multimedia functions, the music and telecommunications industries are realizing their unfolding opportunities to meld together.

AT&T and Napster, one of the original music download services, are joining together and providing direct download capabilities, according to CNNMoney. In an effort to avoid mobile-to- PC connections to transfer music files, direct downloads are growing in popularity. More mobile phone owners are using their cell phones as MP3 players, not to mention the added benefit of using downloads as ringtones.

Aamir’s tattoo makes life miserable for Bangalore woman

Sorry wrong number! Bangalorean Sarah Varghese is sick of saying that, after her number was tattooed on Aamir Khan’s body in the film Ghajini. Aamir tattoos his body with all the clues that he can get to seek revenge from the person who killed his love, Kalpana. But it’s these tattoos that have brought misery to Sarah.

It was Sarah’s number that was tattooed on Aamir’s body which splashed on all posters across the city. Needless to say Sarah is as irritated with Ghajini as Aamir is in the movie “I thought somebody was playing a prank but when I saw the poster I was really shocked. I was wondering how could my number feature in that and I was really shocked,” said Sarah.

o as Ghajni hit the screens on the December 25 and as Aamir bashed up all the baddies he could get in the movie, life for Sarah became even more difficult. Her phone kept ringing continuously sometimes to even 50 times a day. Sarah - who usually doesn’t watch movies on the big screen - decided that enough is enough and went and watched the movie on New Year’s eve.

When asked if she is planning to lodge a complaint against the producers of the movie, Sarah said,”We’ll see as things come and how far it goes. The calls are now reducing, so if it stops completely now, I will not file a complaint”. Sarah might not file a complaint but one thing is sure, Aamir’s memory loss has definitely made her lose sleep. However, Sarah who despite all this is one big Aamir fan and she now just hopes that in his next movie she would have no connection with it.

We are glad, atleast this year we have few quality movies in Kollywood. Kollywood is really stepping to next level and the credit goes to all the innovative directors.

Vaaranam Aayiram leads the top 10 movies of Kollywood followed by Anjathey directed by Myskkin and Universal Hero Kamal Hassan’s Dhasavatharam directed by K.S Ravi Kumar.

1. Vaaranam Aayiram - (The credit goes to the entire team. All have done their task perfectly. Excellent Performance by Suriya, Haunting Music by Harris Jayaraj and A Neat Narration by Gautham Menon)

A Canadian rock band formed by six artists, Nickelback is a very well known group playing music which can be classified as Post-grunge style. One of the founder members used to work for Starbucks, the renowned coffeehouse chain, where he used to say frequently to the customers while giving back the change – ‘here is your nickel back’, and the name of the band is derived from that pleasant experience.

In Canada, the band is marketed by EMI, but has signed up with Roadrunner records for business in the rest of the world. The business involves recordings, tours, related rights and trivia. The first album release of Nickelback was as far back in 1996. Thereafter the band has brought out musical albums with regularity. It is said that Nickelback is the next best thing to come out of Canada after the revered maple syrup.

The first album produced by Nickelback was Hesher in 1996. It consisted of seven tracks. Even though the band started as a country group, it has grown up and is known throughout the world for its unique style and sound. The fan base of the band is also growing day by day. The band is giving concerts in more countries than before.

Immediately after the release of Hesher, Nickelback recorded another album, Curb. It was the first full length album ever produced by the band. Then came a single, Fly, which was played on local radio stations only. Nickelback songs are unique in nature and this has helped the band to carve out a niche for itself in the world of music.

The Nickelback album called The State was released in 1998. It did not meet the expected success initially and the band tied up with EMI and Roadrunner Records for a record sum to market its songs. The State, which was re-released by EMI and Roadrunner in 2000, fetched the band a Gold certificate in both United States and Canada.

The album Silver Side Up, released in 2001, put wings into the dreams of Nickelback. The band got acceptance in the mainstream music industry field with this. A single song, ‘How You Remind Me’ led the charts in US. The Long Road, recorded in 2003 also garnered attention and praise.

However, it was the fifth album, All the Right Reasons, which propelled Nickelback to such heights that we see today. Five songs from the album found themselves in the list of top 20 songs in the US. It should be noted here that three of these songs were charted in the top ten too. The latest album, Dark Horse, released in November 2008, has already climbed several ladders. Some of the tracks have already entered the top 100 and sales are also great.

Vaaranam Aayiram movie opens with an army officer Surya receiving the news of his dad’s death while on a mission. Flashback- Right from his birth, for Surya (Surya) his dad Krishnan (Surya), a middle-class central government employee is more of a friend and a role model than a disciplinarian father. He dotes on his dad more than his mom Malini (Simran) and sister Shriya, and they live a happy life. Surya is influenced by his dad’s stories of how he romanced his mother and won her. As Malini nostalgically tells him- “He just swept me off my feet”!

Surya goes to an Engineering college in Tiruchi, after his father borrows money to pay his capitation fees, but ends up watching movies than attending classes. After his last semester exams, on the way back to Chennai he meets the beautiful Meghana (Sameera Reddy) on train and it is love at first sight. Being a guy who has never looked at a girl, he pulls out his guitar and sings En iniyia pon nilaave!

and Surya are like chalk and cheese; she has graduated from the prestigious REC, Tiruchi a studious type and a topper who is going to do her MS at Berkley University in California! But somehow Surya who says he has been hit by a “thunderbolt” tells her-” I will come into your life and sweep you off your feet”. How his father sticks with him through thick and thin and helps him to attain his goal against all odds, forms rest of this bio pic.

Gautham simply wrings you dry with his overplay of emotions in the father-son bonding. The climax is heart wrenching and heartwarming as Surya’s breakdown and tears roll down his cheek which looks real. The best part of the film is the first half, especially the wispy romance between Surya and Sameera Reddy, with the scene where Surya falls for her in the train is hilarious and romantic. And when Sameera says finally – “I’m in love”, with Surya playing around with a toy helicopter at Fort Point, which offers the best view of the Golden Bridge in San Francisco, the romance tugs at your heart. Only Gautham, a romantic can make such scenes work.

Technically the film is state of art. Rajeevan’s art work captures the ethos and milieu of the 60’s feel in the beginning effectively. For a change Antony does not do any gimmicks, and you should understand that its not an easy job to edit an autobiographical.

Ratnavel’s camera is eye-catching as it pans California, Dehradun, Delhi, Rameswaram and other locations and gives the film richness. Surya’s make-up, his six pack look and old man get-up is very good.

The music of Harris Jayaraj is first rate and tangy, with meaningful lyrics of Thamarai. This is Harris- Gautham’s last film together and the combo is simply terrific. Four of the songs before interval are shot beautifully like a music video, with Adiye Kolluthe… and Nenjukkul Peidhidum.. being the pick of lot, while two songs post interval mars the tempo. However the music of the film and its picturisation will remain the USP of the film.

The power-packed performer award belongs to Surya, who is outstanding in a dual role as father and son. Shorn off any artifice, his anguish, pains and joy look real. The female star cast is simply too good, whether it is Simran playing Surya’s mother, Sameera Reddy pure eye candy and brings an uninhibited joie to her role as Meghana. Divya is outstanding, investing her character with sensitivity a far cry from her Kuthu days.

On the downside, the film is excruciatingly slow, and in the second half plods as the director has no story to say. All of a sudden why did he make his hero larger than life? The Delhi kidnapping and the hero solving it has been done to bring out his heroism, which sticks out like a sore thumb. Is there not a cut-off age to join the army? Surya’s character is far too simplistic. The thing about a father backing his son to go to America and win over his lady love just doesn’t wash. An ordinary middle class, Tamil family speaking so fluently in English does not gel with viewers.

The film demands great patience to sit through and is an overdose of emotions. If the film holds on, it is because of its music and superb performance of Surya. On the whole, the film is optimistic, fresh and emotionally honest. But how mature are our audiences, is the million dollar question?

Rihanna fainted on stage during her concert yesterday at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.

She was performing her song “Umbrella”, which was the grand finale of her concert. She had just come down from flying around on a harness. Her boo Chris Brown joined her on stage for the final performance of the evening. She was observed bending over and signaling that she wasn’t feeling well.

At the beginning of the ad, Klum is seen wearing a white shirt and a pair of white socks. She moves her head back and forth to the music with both of her hands busy rocking her guitar. Saudi Arabia has held its first ‘beautiful goat’ pageant following a series of lucrative camel competitions that have taken off in recent years. Owners of pedigree ‘Najdi’ goats from around the Gulf region converged on Riyadh this week, hoping to win the prize for top male and female goat.

‘The Najdi goat is a pure national product like nothing else in the world,’ said Sheikh Faisal al-Saadoun, a leading Saudi breeder who organised the show. ‘They are different in terms of beauty, shape and how eye-catching they are.’

The goats are named after the central Najd region of Saudi Arabia, where the goats have a distinctive high nose bridge and shaggy hair with a fine, silky quality. They were given a thorough shampoo for the show, according to the official website (wwwl.al-nawader.com) which displayed the winners.
Most of the goats in the competition were bred from one star goat, Burgan (Volcano), from Saadoun’s stable and have been exported around the Gulf in trade worth millions of riyals.

Burgan was not on display at the show as the owners fear he could be afflicted by the ‘evil eye’. But that did not stop offers from the Qatari royal family to buy him, the compere told the gathering.
Saadoun sold dozens of goats from his stable for at least 100,000 riyals ($26,000) each at the show, adding to some 8 million riyals he has made over the years breeding from Burgan.

‘This male goat is different. He is historic and he has contributed to developing the Najdi goat,’ he told Reuters, as poets recited odes in praise of the goats over loud speakers.
The winner in the male category was a son of Burgan with a value of 450,000 riyals.
The gathering at a ranch outside Riyadh gave breeders a chance to trade but Abu Ahmed, a breeder from the United Arab Emirates, was disappointed that Saadoun did not take his offer of 350,000 riyals for a one son of Burgan.

‘I wanted to develop the breed from the point it has got to,’ he said.
However, camels remain the pride of the Bedouins. Delicate females or strapping males can sell for more than a million riyals and camel-racing is a popular throughout the Gulf.

We are used to seeing pop-stars preened to perfection, and aesthetically pleasing actresses smiling back at us from the covers of magazines that we often fail to stop and question whether such images are a reality.

The art of retouching has become common place in today's media, with advertising and magazine covers giving the faces of the so-called 'beautiful people' a helping hand. The process is relatively easy but not always particularly cheap; but the price of perfection it seems can never be too high-or can it? One world famous actress believed that the myth of retouching needed exploding after her somewhat altered image appeared on the front cover of an upmarket men's magazine title.

In 2003, British actress and 'Titanic' star, Kate Winslet appeared on the cover of GQ Magazine; the result was surprising, particularly for Winslet herself, as her legs were reduced in size and extended in length by as much as 'a third' the actress claimed. Although editor of GQ Magazine Dylan Jones admitted to the digital changes he did not agree with Winslet's view that the 'retouching is excessive.' The actress has been consistently honest about her views of the media's obsession with the female body and the circle-of-shame culture we currently live in.

Other celebrities are also hitting back at digitally enhanced images, believing that people deserve to see the truth behind the lens. One of the biggest supporters of the natural look is Alesha Dixon, pop starlet and winner of hit TV show 'Strictly Come Dancing'. In her BBC Three show 'Look but Don't Touch' broadcast this July, Alesha adorned the front cover of a well known magazine without her image being retouched at all, and the image was also used on billboards across London.

Alesha's stance was simple: 'Women aspire to be like flawless pictures in magazines but they don't realise what goes into making them like that'. Like Kate Winslet, Alesha felt compelled to speak out after feeling that the retouching performed on a series of photos that were taken for FHM magazine was a step too far.

The BBC Three documentary confronted the tricky subject of celebrity images head on, but although women do appreciate that images have often been manipulated, they still aspire to look like them. However you can't help but wonder, if images were more realistic, would that translate to society's idea of beauty?

NAC conductor Pinchas Zukerman, counted among the world's leading violinists, recently had the honour of playing the world's most expensive musical instrument.

The violin is a 1741 instrument made by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu, for which Russian lawyer and businessman Maxim Viktorov paid a reported $3.9 million U.S. in a private sale brokered by Sotheby's last month. The previous most expensive instrument had been a 1708 Stradivari violin sold by Christie's for $3.54 million in 2006.

On March 21, Mr. Zukerman played the instrument in a private concert at the Great Kremlin Palace in Moscow. Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, which Mr. Zukerman will offer at the NAC on Wednesday and Thursday nights, was among the music he played in Moscow.

Title track Money hai toh honey hai is a mix of hip-hop, electronic music and tinges of Chinese sounds. The composer duo joins Harshdeep Kaur for the rendition. Since the song is quite a concoction with Sameer's bizarre lyrics, its popularity is doubtful.

With Awaara dil, we move on to an unconventional, hip-hop number. Rendered by a horde of singers - Adnan Sami, Shruti Pathak, Bob, Ishq Bector, Shantanu Hudlika, Nitz 'N' Sony and Arya - the song moves at a steady pace. Sameer's peppy lyrics gel with the arrangements that are kept thumping and a lot of rap is thrown in as well.

Churiyaan doesn't waver much from the genre except for mixing hip-hop with a bit of Sufi. Sunidhi Chauhan and Labh Janjua croon this romantic piece pretty well that has Sameer's average lyrics. The arrangements are an easy mix between the two genres and thankfully do not result in a major chaos.

Next Ta na na is more of a dance number, with Nitin, Sony, Earl and Arya joining lead singers Kunal Ganjawala and Rekha Bharadwaj.

Rangeeli raat stops the hip-hop chain. The loud track, revolving around a grand celebration, has the quintessential, blaring instruments tossed in and, to top it all, it has the piercing vocals of Daler Mehendi. Sunidhi Chauhan, Saleem and Arya join him, but they don't complement him. The number ends up being a complete mess.

Changing the genre once again, Nitin and Sony move on to rock for No big deal. And this time, they get one of the ideal rock gurus Suraj Jagan for the rendition. The track has chances of doing well.

Dance master is not so appealing and can easily be skipped. Although drummer Sivamani collaborates with singer Shaan, this does not work out in either one's favour as both the music and the arrangements have a very dead feel to them.

Finally, instrumentals take over the reins with Hope. The track is an instrumental piece on the lines of No big deal and includes a couple of soulful and harmonious instruments that make the entire package notable. A must-listen.

Money... is an album without your typical Bollywood music. Even though the experimentation works out well for the new composers, it is too soon to say how it will work out for the makers of the movie.

There are many different ways to approach guitar tuning. We'll touch on a couple of the more effective methods on how to tune a guitar. Not necessarily the most popular as some methods, though extensively used, are considered 'bad habits' rather than genuine, effective guitar tuning alternatives.

The guitar standard tuning is as follows:

STRING - 6th String (bottom, bass, low) NOTE - E
5th String - A
4th String - D
3rd String - G
2nd String - B
1st String (top, treble, high) - E

Tips For Any Guitar Tuning Method

First, lets cover a few things that every player should know when taking the proper approach to guitar tuning and how to learn to tune guitar.

Learn to attach the strings to the machine heads properly. Never try to tune down to a note. Stretch the strings and tune up to the note. Tuning heads have a certain amount of 'play' in them so make a couple of deep bends and then fine tune the string. Before tuning a suspect string, check it against both adjacent strings to determine which string is actually out of tune. The string you suspect may not even be the culprit. When tuning a guitar with a vibrato arm, tune the string, give the arm a good shake, stretch the string, give the arm another shake and fine tune.

Here's A Quick Method For Guitar Tuning

Tune the treble (high) E string to an A440 tuning fork by holding your finger on the 5th fret, then tune the open B string to the open treble E string – listening to the interval of a fourth. It's easy to hear the fourth in that register.

Play the A note fretted at the 2nd fret of the G string, and compare it to the open treble E string – you're listening for a perfect fifth interval.

Fret the 2nd fret E note on the D string and compare it to the treble E string open. Double check this by fretting the E note on the 14th fret of the D string.

Now tune the 7th fret harmonic on the A string (an E note) to the open treble E string.

Finally, tune the 5th fret harmonic on the bass E string to the open treble E string.

This is a simple guitar tuning method that works well.

Breaking News! Ishmeet Singh, winner of Star Voice of India 2007, died of drowning in Maldives. He had gone to Maldives this morning to participate in a music show on August 1. Ishmeet was from Ludhiana. According to reports, Ishmeet drowned in a swimming pool while having fun with his friends.

Ishmeet Singh won many hearts in India and abroad for his great singing skills. After being crowned the winner of Star Voice of India on November 24, 2007, he was handed over the trophy by legendary Lata Mangeshkar. The entire country plunged into grief and sadness at Ishmeet's untimely death.

Vienna July 26: Salzburg is alive with the sound of music once again, as the von Trapp family's villa opened its doors to the public this weekend for the first time, as a hotel and museum. The villa in Aigen, a southeastern suburb of Salzburg, was for over 15 years the home of Captain von Trapp, his seven children and their governess Maria, who would inspire a Broadway musical, an Oscar-winning film and some of the best-loved characters on the silver screen. Now, 70 years after the family left Austria for the United States following the Nazis' annexation of the country in 1938, and over 40 years after cinema audiences were first treated to "The Sound of Music," the estate has rediscovered its roots. The 878 square meter (9,450 square feet) "Villa Trapp" opened on Friday afternoon in the presence of one of the children, Maria von Trapp, aged 93. "It’s very nice to be here, I feel like home again", she said at a press conference in the villa. The original mansion with its imperial yellow facade, white borders and dark green shutters, surrounded by trees, offers what no film location can: a sense of history. The late-19th century mansion by Italian architect Valentin Ceconi was the home of Captain von Trapp and his seven children -- their real names: Rupert, Agathe, Maria, Werner, Hedwig, Johanna and Martina -- from 1923 to 1938. And this is where "Fraeulein Maria" -- actually Maria Kutschera, a teacher from Vienna who had joined the Nonnberg Benedictine convent in Salzburg -- was first introduced to the children and her future husband whom she married in 1927. Now, the villa, which is still owned by the missionaries who inhabited the grounds until recently, has been turned into a hotel and event location, catering to wedding parties and dinners, even offering cakes from one of Maria von Trapp's own recipes. Starting in 2009, the Villa Trapp will also organise another true Austrian tradition: a grand annual summer ball. Meanwhile, guests can stay in the suite that once served as Captain von Trapp's office, or in the parlour in which the family took their afternoon tea. "In each hallway, in each corner, you will find a piece of the history of a world-famous family," boasts the villa's website. In the grand salon, one can admire photographs of the family, a bell from Captain von Trapp's ship and a model boat he built himself, while on the sprawling estate guests can sit on a bench where he used to relax. Appropriately, the villa's opening coincides with two important dates on the Austrian calendar. 2008 marks the 70th anniversary of the Anschluss, or annexation of Austria and the von Trapps' departure for the United States, where they would ultimately settle down in Vermont. The Villa Trapp's inauguration also came a day before the opening of the world-renowned annual Salzburg Festival, in which the von Trapp family singers won their first prize in 1937, before playing in venues around Europe and the United States.

When I first started studying the history of music, I did not realize what I was getting into. I had thought that music history was somewhat of a trivial pursuit. In fact, I only took my history of classical music class because I needed the credits. I did not realize how completely fascinating music history is. You see, in our culture many of us do not really learn to understand music. For much of the world, music is a language, but for us it is something that we consumed passively. When I began to learn about the history of Western music, however, it changed all that for me. I have had some experience playing musical instruments, but I have never mastered one enough to really understand what music is all about. This class showed me.

When most of us think about the history of music, we think of the history of rock music. We assume that the history is simple because the music is simple. In fact, neither is the case. The history of music, whether you're talking about classical music, rock music, jazz music, or any other kind, is always complicated. New chord structures are introduced bringing with them new ways of understanding the world. New rhythmic patterns are introduced, bringing with them new ways of understanding time. And music reflects all of it.

Even when the class was over, I could not stop learning about the history of music. It had whetted my appetite, and I wanted more. I got all the music history books that I could find. I even began to research forms of music that had not interested me before in the hopes of enhancing my musical knowledge further. Although I was in school studying toward something very different – a degree in engineering – I had thought about giving it up and going back to get a degree in musicology. That is how much I am fascinated by the subject.

If you have never taken a course in the history of music, you don't know what you are missing out on. The radio will never sound the same to you again. Everything will seem much more rich, much more luminous, and much more important. A new song can reflect a new way of being, and a new way of imagining life in the world. This is what learning about the history of music means to many of us.

Sunday was going to be a shorter day than the prior two, ending at ten, but the lineup was going to be chock full of musical goodness. Ensuring that we were going to have the fortitude we needed meant a solid breakfast, one that was found in Maggie's Krooked Cafe in Tannersville. Very yummy.

We missed the Felice Brothers, but I was sure to be set up well before Drive-By Truckers took the stage. I'd try to be objective here, but its not possible. I love this band.

I don't know how much video editing they did, but it seems to be a lot. I'm just puzzled why they try to make her look thinner in every photoshoot and music video, can't they just accept the way she looks?

Is He Really That Good?

David Archuleta has been all the rage lately with American idol fans and the judges. The question is…Is he really that good? In my honest opinion - I think not. If you ask me, David Archuleta is mostly hype. Now don’t get me wrong, as he can certainly sing. It’s just that to me he is not diverse enough in his musical arrangements and not a flexible enough singer.

He sings the same tune and harmony every week and never changes up. He constantly sticks to safe songs and never takes chances with the music. He gets up on stage, does a quarter squat, puts the mic to his mouth and sings with that weird smile that only gets the little girls screaming for him. What he needs to do is get up on that stage and perform! If David Archuleta would actually perform and sing with some enthusiasm then I would think he would have a chance against David Cook, who I believe should win the American Idol contest.
